Wellington International Airport

Wellington Airport is located 7 km from the capital city of New Zealand – Wellington.
This is the third largest airport in New Zealand. It offers domestic flights and flights to Australia and Fiji as well. Designed by Studio Pacific, Warren and Mahoney studios, the airport is one of the most interesting and, for many, the most beautiful airports in the world.
It started operating in 1959. The International Terminal’s exterior resembles a shape of a rock so many call it simply “The Rock”. The framework of the building is made of tridimensional, mosaic panels.

Even though it seems tepid from the outside, you can get comfortable in a cozy, wood-topped departure hall. However, the airport is just famous for its original architecture.
The amazing nature of New Zealand was an inspiration for the filmmakers of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”, so they decided to use it to shoot the movies. At the airport itself, you can meet decorations such as a massive sculpture of Gollum or Smaug, indistinguishably resembling the movie characters.
